“If you have too much to do, with God’s help you will find time to do it all.” – St. Peter Canisius
Reflection on Mental Exhaustion (youth version)
In our little minds, we seem to think that we need to do it all. And more than that, we need to do it all perfectly. That is far from true. God doesn’t want us to be his tired servants. He wants us to be Histhriving saints! The key here is balance. If you are good at something, let’s develop that skill. Let’s put time and effort into developing your craft, your sport, your artwork, your music, or your gift. Do things that make you happy, not the things that your friends want you to do. It’s a disservice to yourself to spread yourself too thin doing too many things. If you do this, you run the danger of not being productive at any of them. You might wear yourself out going to event after event.
If you are feeling overwhelmed or overloaded right now, let’s take a step back. First of all, know that God is with you. As St. Peter Canisius articulates, God will help you find time to accomplish everything. God will bring people to help you get through it. They will be available to take things off your to do list and lighten your load. God could also be calling you to drop some of your commitments. Perhaps you can speak to a trusted adult and let them know that you’ve got a lot going on. Maybe a parent can take one activity a week off your plate. You don’t have to be a superhero doing every activity known to man.
Here’s the truth. Your mind cannot function if you do not give it some mental rest. The best thing you can do is to take care of yourself. Make sure that your basic human needs are met - food, water, and sleep. Remember to breathe and take some time for yourself. Reevaluate your commitments if you need to.
Prayer:
Dear God, I am so appreciative of Your Presence during this incredibly busy time of my life. At times, I can feel so overwhelmed. May Your peace surround me. Please bring me people to help lighten my load. May I also reevaluate my commitments. I know that You are with me at every step. I love You! Amen.
