“How could I wear a crown of gold when my Lord wears a crown of thorns, and He wears it for me?” -St. Elizabeth of Hungary
Reflection:
St. Elizabeth of Hungary was one amazing woman. She was born a royal, and she had access to a wealthy lifestyle. However, she was drawn to a life of service. She was known for feeding the hungry and taking care of the sick. Daily she would feed hundreds of the poor, especially those who came to the gates of the palace. She received backlash from family because they were concerned she was using royal funds “incorrectly” to serve the poor. Despite the criticism, she served anyway. She was deeply in love with the Lord and desired to serve Him in the faces of the poor and sick.
Today’s quote makes us stop and think. What are we aiming for? Are we striving to acquire more wealth? Are we striving to be seen by others as powerful or important? Let us be more like St. Elizabeth of Hungary looking for ways to be more like Jesus. May we remember Christ’s Passion whenever we long for richer things. May we strive to live more simply so that we can instead use those funds to help others.
Prayer:
Dear God, may I desire to serve others instead of myself. May I refrain from seeking glory in this world with fame and riches. Rid me of the desire to acquire more possessions. I trust in Your divine providence to provide for me. May I share my wealth with others. May I emulate St. Elizabeth of Hungary by feeding the poor and ministering to the sick. I love You, Lord. Amen.
