“God is more pleased by one work, however small, done secretly, without desire that it be known, than a thousand done with the desire that people know of them.” -St. John of the Cross
Reflection On the Desire to Be Known:
In an age of social media, it’s hard to desire to be unknown and for our actions to be unseen. As a society, we have turned toward others on social platforms to receive acknowledgement and acceptance. Our self-esteem can fluctuate depending on how many likes or comments we have on our posts. While there are some exceptions, we have a tendency to want others to see what we do.
St. John of the Cross challenges us to remain hidden in the works we do. Our good deeds shouldn’t be for others to see (and to comment on). We shouldn’t be like the Pharisees and Sadducees who made their good works known. If we do things only for others to see, we need to ask ourselves why we are searching for acceptance. When we do charitable things, let us remain hidden. Search for God’s affirmation. Serve others without seeking anything more. May we desire to live with hearts of charity and spirits of thanksgiving.
Prayer:
Dear God, You search my heart, and You know me. I desire to serve You and Your people. May I do nothing in conceit. May I serve without being served. May I learn to be charitable, and may I not seek acknowledgement from others. May my heart be poured out for You and You alone. I love You. Amen.
